ABOUT THE CROYDON MUSIC FESTIVAL

A competitive festival for the Amateur Performing Arts)

The Croydon Music Festival (including all kinds of music, dance and speech and drama) is a large annual amateur performing arts festival and is a registered charity. The Festival is for the whole community and participants come from all over Croydon and the south east as well as much further afield, such as Birmingham, Liverpool, Ireland, and even France and China! The Festival is now a very high profile and important event in Croydon’s calendar. Entries have steadily risen each year and the estimated number of those taking part is in excess of 3500 children and adults.

The aim of the Festival is to help raise standards and the quality of the amateur arts; to motivate, encourage and educate performers; and to give the opportunity, enjoyment and experience of performing before an audience. Experienced, professional adjudicators give constructive appraisal to all participants in written and verbal comments. All participants go away with a certificate for each performance and there are awards and trophies to be won. Anyone who is involved with the amateur performing arts can take part whatever their age or ability. In each Festival there are very young performers playing small instruments, dancers under the age of 5, many stunning performances from the more advanced and older performers and some delightful choral music. There is also wonderful group music making such as handbells, steel bands and percussion workshops with young children playing the samba.

Since 1990, the Festival has developed opportunities for all cultures to participate. There are large Asian music sections and a class for music from other cultures, national dance and Asian dance.

Speech and Drama was added to the Syllabus in 1998 and in 1999 Dance was reintroduced to the syllabus after an interval of some years. The Dance events take place at the Ashcroft Theatre (Fairfield, Croydon) in the May/June half-term week. The Ashcroft is an ideal venue for dance with a large stage and proscenium arch, excellent backstage and front of house facilities. Other events take place at Whitgift School and the Fairfield Concert Hall, the Parish Church and the BRIT School.
The Festival is affliated the British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech.
